Hand Carved Wooden Lasts

Hand Carved Wooden Lasts

Heres a pair of lasts that were created for a recent client.

These were carved from local holly wood, air-dried and split from logs that are over 12” in diameter.

What Are lasts?

A last is a crucial component in the process of creating footwear.

In simple terms, it is a three-dimensional mold or form that is shaped like a foot and serves as the foundation for constructing shoes or boots.

The purpose of a last is to determine the shape of the shoe, including its length, width, height, and curvature. Therefore, it is essential to use the right last for each shoe design to ensure the best possible fit and comfort for the wearer.

Wooden lasts have been used for centuries in bespoke shoemaking. They are crafted from hardwoods because they retain their shape even when subjected to the stresses of stretching and shaping shoes on them. These lasts provide a durable and reliable foundation for creating shoes that are uniquely tailored to the individual wearer's foot shape, size and posture.
